He is later persuaded by the co-pilot to surrender to authorities. *4 June - John Turnley, leader of the Irish Independence Party, is killed by Loyalists. *26 June - Former member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party, Miriam Daly, is assassinated. *15 October - Ronnie Bunting, a member of the Irish National Liberation Army allegedly involved in the 1979 assassination of a House of Commons member Airey Neave, is killed by unidentified gunmen in his home in the Lower Falls area of Belfast along with Noel Lyttle. Bunting's wife, Suzanne, is wounded in the attack. Although Bunting's death was claimed by the Ulster Defence Association, members of the INLA claimed involvement by the SAS. *17 December - An assassination attempt against Christopher Tugendhat, a delegate of the European Commission, fails in Brussels, Belgium.
